Class : Clinical Medicine & Public Health, Nursing & Midwifery.
Purpose: To enable students develop an appropriate communication Skills that are required to manage patients as well as in working with Health teams and communities.
Course objectives
This course is designed in a way that by the end of it, students should be able to;
- Define the term communication
- Discuss the importance of Communication
- Explain the process of communication
- Understand the factors that affect communication process
- Illustrate the types of communication
- Describe tips for Non-verbal communication
- Describe the various Media of Communication
- Describe tips for effective communication
- Demonstrate ability to write letters, report, & minutes
- Demonstrate ability to create rapport with Patients, take History, conduct Physical examination and give feedback to patients
- Applying knowledge and skills in Counseling & educating patients and their families on health issue
- Show ability to communicate with patients and members of the community when breaking bad news
- Demonstrate ability to use communication skills in the practice of Clinical Medicine
Methodology
This course shall be taught through lecturing, discussion, Presentation, demonstration and Participatory.
Grading system is as follows:
- Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) is marked out of 15 % and Group presentation 15%
- Class attendance is compulsory to All as it consist of 10% of the total marks
- Final Examination is marked out 60%
